Once again, Rodeo FX teamed up with VFX Producer Steve Kullback, VFX Supervisor Joe Bauer and the whole team at HBO to create impressive visual effects for Game of Thrones season 7.

Our work on this season involved extensive concept art for the sea battle scene in episode 2, as well as the season finale epic wall destruction. These concept arts helped materialize the vision of the director and then guided our work as we created the actual sequences.

For the nighttime sea battle, we created several CG environments, adding massive parts of 3D oceans, and a fleet of over a hundred 3D ships to the battle. We built the Silence entirely in 3D and completed Yara’s ship using set extensions and CG dressing to create a whole ship. We also used compositing techniques and created various particle simulations, adding art-directed embers, slowing them down or have them move chaotically to enhance the mood of the scenes. We also intensified the fire by enhancing the on-set fire with CG or comped fire elements.

For the wall’s dramatic collapse in the season finale, we generated the wall, and then meticulously scored it to break it apart in multiple shots. We added secondary debris, smoke and interactive fire when the fire hits the wall. For the actual collapse, our team created debris, powdered snow and water splashes as the ice falls into the sea. Real fire elements were provided and color graded to become the ice dragon’s destructive blue breath. This work earned our team a VES award for our outstanding effects simulations on the destruction of the wall at Eastwatch-by-the-Sea.

One the most broadcasted TV series in the world, Game of Thrones is a multiple award-winning show. Awards include Satellite Awards, Golden Globes, Emmy and VES (Visual Effects Society) Awards.
